Thanks for your transparency @sara Interesting that you define Productized Services as recurring. I see PS as flat rate pre-packaged or MRR/sub. I find PS can work if you know what exactly goes in to a project, requires low communication, and is simple rinse/repeat work. But ops can and some projects are so custom it's hard to package up. But VIP days and "estimating" the amount of days required seems to work best... as it's often a slippery slope and that allows NOT being locked into a rate and getting paid for our ACTUAL time, which is such a big problem in our industry. And I see any recurring service should actually be for services that are needed monthly, otherwise, it's just a payment plan really.

I mean to each their own. You have to be REALLY good, I mean exceptional to run a successful productized design service. Not only have none of my clients left, but they keep paying even if they don't have any current work just to have me on call. 95% of "designers" like 95% of "singers" think they can sing, but they REALLY can't. Because when you can sing, no one has anything to say other than - you're amazing. People don't walk away from amazing if they don't have to - amazing designers make founders feel like they have lighting in a bottle.

I feel like that one Twitter bro completely changed the definition of productized service? I've seen them talked about (and succeeded with! often!) for years now, and it wasn't until him that I saw anyone define it as an unlimited retainer...that's like, the exact, complete opposite of how I've seen other people define it (a simple, clearly pre-defined service package like a website audit or affiliate program setup). I feel like it's going to cause enough confusion that the phrase will soon be useless.

I think this is a symptom of bad processes. If their other systems were running well, then they wouldn't be afraid to spend 20 minutes talking to a client. But because they are flying by the seat of their pants and not managing their time appropriately, that 20 minutes is time they are spending on something that could probably be automated. And if they only have clients that "steal" their time (take an hour when they ask for 15), then they need to do a better job of bringing in the right clients with their messaging, vetting clients on the sales call, and setting boundaries through onboarding. It's simple, but it ain't easy.

I'm on team "whatever is the best way to figure this out as quickly as possible." Totally agree that a lot of freelancers and agencies seem to hate their clients!
